Here’s what you need to know before becoming a real estate agent.
Are you considering a career in real estate? If you are, you’ve probably only seen the highlight reels on social media. Yes, if you make it to the top of the industry, it can get pretty glamorous, but that’s not how things are for the vast majority of agents. So if things aren’t exactly what they seem like on HGTV, what’s it really like to be an agent? To help you get a better picture of this career, I’m sharing four things about real estate every prospective agent should know:
- It’s a relationship business. Homes aren’t your business; people are. If you build strong relationships that last, your business will thrive. Otherwise, it will stagnate. It’s all about how you treat people and how you can help them.
- It comes with freedom, but you need to be disciplined. The freedom this industry gives you is a blessing and a curse. You don’t have a boss and can set your own schedule, but you need to be disciplined and use your time effectively. A lot of people get out of the business because they realize they can’t force themselves to do the things they need to do to make money. If you struggle with this, joining a team might provide the structure you need to succeed.

- Agents are professional problem solvers. During transactions, problems will inevitably come up. A big part of your job is doing whatever it takes to make sure things run smoothly despite them.
- Real estate has high highs and low lows. One week, you might sell three houses in three days and feel like you’re on top of the world. Other times, you won’t sell one house in a whole month. You need to be able to handle the emotional rollercoaster and look at the big picture to find success.
